  • What is Tarion?

    Tarion is a private corporation established by statute in 1976, to regulate new home builders and protect the rights of new home buyers. Tarion administers the Ontario New Home Warranties Plan Act, which sets out the warranty protection that new homeowners are entitled to in Ontario.

    Tarion works hard every day to serve the public interest by, first and foremost, protecting consumers and their new home purchase. Tarion investigates homeowner warranty claims; resolve warranty disputes between homeowners and builders; provide deposit and delayed closing protection for new home buyers; and prosecute illegal builders. Further, they regulate new home builders and ensure they meet a province-wide standard of technical competence and financial capacity.

  • What Does the New Home Warranty Cover?

    Builders in Ontario are deemed to provide statutory warranty coverage as outlined in the Ontario New Home Warranties Plan Act. The coverage includes: protection for deposits; protection against financial loss for contract homes; compensation for delays in closing or occupancy; and one, two and seven year warranties for certain construction deficiencies.

    Warranty coverage begins on the date of possession of a home or condominium unit, and remains in effect until the end of the warranty period, even if the home is sold before the warranty expires.
